The costs of an Open Access (OA) monograph are an open debate, but a recently published Final Report of the Dutch OAPEN-NL project gives some initial answers. Over the past three years, Open Access Publishing in European Networks (OAPEN) Foundation, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and SURF have been running a pilot project called “OAPEN-NL: A project exploring Open Access monograph publishing in the Netherlands.” The pilot takes into consideration both author and publisher perspectives and assesses the effects of OA on scholars. The International Social Science Council (ISSC) presented a report co-published by UNESCO and OECD entitled World Social Science Report 2013: Changing Global Environments on November 15th at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris. The report conveys a sense of urgency and calls upon the international social science community to increase collaboration and take a solutions-oriented approach to environmental issues. It calls for a transformative approach that is “bolder, better, bigger, different.” The report is available in print and to read online in the OECD i-library.
