Sylvia Bawa
Associate Professor of Sociology

Sylvia Bawa is an associate Professor in Sociology at York University. She has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s University and MA in Social Justice and Equity Studies from Brock University. Her research interests are in globalization, postcolonial and African feminisms, human/women’s rights, and critical development theory.
Currently, Director of the Resource Centre for Public Sociology at York, and editor for the interdisciplinary open access journal, Studies in Social Justice. From 2016-2018, Dr. Bawa was an executive board member (at large) of the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS). At York University, she serves as an executive member of the African Studies program, Sociology Graduate program, the Research Centre for Public Sociology and past executive member and seminar series convenor at the Harriet Tubman Institute. She has also served on the Academic Planning and Policy Committees of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Sociology Graduate and Undergraduate Curriculum, Tenure, Promotions and Appointment.
