Policy and Advocacy Update

Submission for the 2024 Federal Pre-Budget Consultations

On August 4, the Federation submitted its recommendations to the federal government’s pre-Budget consultations in advance of the 2024 Budget.

Federal leadership and investment are urgently needed to support the vital contributions of researchers in the humanities and social sciences and across all disciplines. Our submission calls on the Government of Canada to secure the essential building blocks of Canada’s research ecosystem:

  • Recommendation 1: Address the urgent underinvestment in Canada’s next generation of researchers and innovators by increasing graduate scholarships, postdoctoral fellowships and research grants.
  • Recommendation 2: Commit to sustained, multi-year investment in research through the granting councils and across all disciplines including the humanities and social sciences.
  • Recommendation 3: Invest in open access publishing and infrastructures.

We encourage you to share the submission with your networks and join us at the next Federation Advocacy Forum in September (invitation forthcoming).

Policy Development Framework

On July 17, the Federation introduced the Policy Development Framework: a new mechanism to guide how we develop public policy positions on issues of importance to the humanities and social sciences community. This framework establishes a more systemic and transparent policy development process that deepens opportunities for member input and engagement.

The Federation will be accepting policy proposals from members (scholarly association members and institutional members) on a rolling basis. To be eligible for consideration at the next meeting of the Federation Board of Directors, please submit your proposal before August 18, 2023.
