OTTAWA, September 14, 2012 – The Government of Canada reinforced its commitment to higher education yesterday with the announcement of the latest recipients of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Of the 72 fellowships announced today, 23 were awarded to researchers in the social sciences and humanities, through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Each valued at $70,000 annually, for up to two years, the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to Canadian and international researchers alike.

“These fellowships ensure that some of the world’s most talented early-career scholars have the support they need to carry out original, cutting-edge research and make important contributions to Canada and the world,” said Graham Carr, president of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. “Investing in research across multiple disciplines is critical to addressing today’s global social, economic and political challenges. These fellowships help Canada strengthen its leadership position in research and innovation by recruiting exceptional new scholars from abroad and retaining outstanding Canadians.”

Fellowships were awarded to research in a variety of social issues, including cross-border mobility, the measurement of productivity in Canada, and policy innovation in the face of climate change.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program was established in 2010 to establish Canada's reputation as a first-class research destination and to attract some of the world’s top researchers to Canadian universities.

The funding for these fellowships is delivered through the three federal granting agencies: the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC).
