It has been a week of good news for students and scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Inside Higher Ed reported that arts graduates in the United States are generally employed (only 4% of the graduates surveyed reported being unemployed and looking for work) and satisfied with their education and their career path. The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, announced this week that SSHRC has awarded $6.3M in funding for outreach initiatives and events meant to strengthen the connection between scholars in the social sciences and humanities and the community and to build understanding of the important research conducted by those disciplines.
Heather Munroe-Blum, principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University and a member of a U.S. National Research Council committee that presented a report on measures to strengthen American research universities, wrote about the lessons that Canada can take from the report for the Globe and Mail. Her recommendations include committing to more stable funding for university research, streamlining regulations and strengthening accountability, investing in graduate education and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

It seems Congress made a strong impression on James Skidmore, this year’s academic co-convenor from the University of Waterloo. He wrote about his experience of organizing Congress in University Affairs.
ASPP-funded researcher Sharon Anne Cook was profiled in the Ottawa Citizen and discussed her book Sex, Lies and Cigarettes, which examines the historical relationship between women, tobacco and pop culture in Canada.
