On June 27, the Federation received an invitation from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to provide consultation and feedback on the new Capstone Research Funding Organization following the June 17 Letter to the Presidents of the federal research granting councils. This is an important consultation opportunity for our community to ensure sustained federal investment and support for our disciplines.
As announced in the 2024 Federal Budget, the Government of Canada will undertake restructuring of the federal research granting councils (SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR) within a new Capstone Organization. The June 17 letter provided some details regarding the proposed structure and mandate of this new organization, and presented a series of feedback questions for the broader research community to address (please see the Appendix).
This is a critical moment for the Federation and its members to provide input on the design of this new organization, to communicate the importance of SSHRC funding for our disciplines, and to bring attention to any risks or concerns associated with this restructuring of the federal research system.
Your perspectives will be vital to this discussion. There are two ways you can provide feedback:
- Your association or institution may contribute input to the Federation’s submission. If you would like to contribute, please share your feedback with us at policy@federationhss.ca by Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
- Your association or institution can submit a response to the June 17 letter by Wednesday, July 17, 2024, to the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) Secretariat email box CRCCsecretariat@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.
We look forward to working with you on this important initiative.
Sincerely,
Karine Morin
President and Chief Executive Officer
