26 - Canadian Historical Association (CHA)
2025 is a year of many important commemorations. Canada and the United States will certainly mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. We may also want to mark important turning points in women’s history, and interrogate mainstream media’s tendency to privilege certain historical events while neglecting others, particularly those in the social, cultural, and familial realms. Many other sides of dominant narratives are the object of critical inquiries.
Among these celebrations and commemorations, the voices of some individuals and collectivities will be favoured over others. Differences will be strengthened or erased, silences will be maintained or broken, and unresolved and reignited conflicts will be the object of analyses and debates. The discipline of history will contribute to these conversations and will deepen our understanding of dominant and marginal narratives. The 2025 annual meeting will be the occasion to continue our critical dialogues on these themes and others, to keep innovating in our practices and to persist in the development of varied, nuanced, accurate and inclusive perspectives on the past.
