The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and York University are delighted to announce a new partnership that will see York host the 2014 Canada Prizes ceremony at its Glendon College campus in mid-town Toronto, on May 7, 2014.
We look forward to welcoming many colleagues and friends of the humanities and social sciences, particularly from the Greater Toronto Area, to join in celebrating the winners of these prestigious book awards.
Glendon was identified as a fitting site for this year’s ceremony in light of its bilingual mandate and its unique focus on education in the humanities and social sciences. The event will take place in the beautifully designed facilities of the Centre of Excellence for French-language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education in Southern Ontario, opened in 2012, and set in the natural parkland of the Glendon campus.

York University will be working with the Federation to continue to raise the profile of the Canada Prizes. On this note, we are extremely pleased to announce that Mr. Scott McIntyre, former Chairman and Publisher of Douglas & McIntyre, has generously agreed to serve as an external advisor. Mr. McIntyre’s understanding of Canadian book publishing and his networks in the literary community will be tremendous assets as we look to increase Canadians’ appreciation for the Prizes and for the value of humanities and social sciences scholarship.
Awarded annually by the Federation, the Canada Prizes celebrate the best Canadian scholarly books—not simply within a single academic discipline, but across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The Prizes are awarded to books that make an exceptional contribution to scholarship, are engagingly written, and enrich the social, cultural and intellectual life of Canada.
The finalists and winners are chosen by a jury of leading academics, public intellectuals and past winners. Every year, four prizes of $2,500 are awarded:
- Canada Prize in the Humanities
- Canada Prize in the Social Sciences
- Prix du Canada en sciences humaines
- Prix du Canada en sciences sociales
The Federation will be announcing the 2014 Canada Prize finalists at its Annual Conference and annual general meeting in March, in Montreal, Quebec.
