Understanding the UN SDGs through the lens of Decolonization, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (DEDI)
By Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor, York University
When the United Nations published the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calling on all nations and stakeholders to unite in an action plan to strengthen people, planet, and prosperity, it recognized that no single country, organization or person has the capacity to address the globally complex challenges facing our world – including climate change, poverty and systemic inequality. York University, bolstered by the support of our community, realized that universities have a role to play in building the interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral capacity through our research, innovation, teaching and global partnerships to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Read about how the UN SDGs inform this year’s Congress in a new blog.
Congress 2023: the biggest Fair Trade Event in Canadian history
York University is marking this year’s proceedings with a groundbreaking achievement, as part of their efforts to support sustainability at Congress. When a Fair Trade Event is designated, it supports fairer conditions and better prices for people in the Global South who grow and make our products. Fair Trade is a market-based system that uses consumer support to influence international trade practices, and is a powerful tool for change. Learn about what this achievement means and how it’s accomplished at Congress 2023.
Remember, sustainability at Congress is a team effort! Brush up on how you can contribute.
Sensational spectacles
Start your Congress week off in technicolor wonder at the Arts@Congress Showcase. This celebratory event will align with the conference theme of Reckonings and Re-Imaginings. Through an array of creative arts and cultural activities, the showcase invites the Congress community to contemplate and reflect on new lessons, new reckonings about what is needed to know and care for each other across our differences.
Keep the brain waves moving throughout the week by attending the four Big Thinking lectures daily from May 29 to 31 and turn your thought into action at Career Corner workshops.
Be sure to catch the SSHRC Storyetellers Showcase on May 29. The Final Five winners will be announced right after, at the start of the Big Thinking lecture!
