OTTAWA, October 12, 2012 –The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) welcomes today’s announcement from the Government of Canada for a major reinvestment in the Canada Research Chairs program. The program funds world-class researchers—both Canadian and international—whose work addresses important challenges facing society today.
“The Canada Research Chairs program is an essential component of Canada’s efforts to build an innovative and prosperous knowledge society. It supports cutting-edge research across a variety of disciplines to help tackle social, economic and political challenges at home and around the world,” said Graham Carr, president of the CFHSS. “This is a program Canadians can be proud of.”
The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) made the announcement today at the University of Toronto. A total of $121.6 million is being invested in 155 renewed and newly awarded Canada Research Chairs at universities across Canada. Of these, more than 25 are involved in research in the humanities and social sciences, and are funded through all three federal granting agencies.
Among the recipients are a number of scholars in the social sciences and humanities, including:
- Michael Scott Taylor, CRC in International Energy and Environmental Economics, University of Calgary
- Zhenyu Wu, CRC in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Manitoba
- Céline Le Bourdais, CRC in Social Statistics and Family Change, McGill University
- Grant Murray, CRC in Coastal Resource Management, Vancouver Island University
- Stuart J. Murray, CRC in Rhetoric and Ethics, Carleton University
