Dear members of the Federation,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that, after an extensive executive search, Karine Morin has been appointed as the next President and CEO of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, effective tomorrow, June 15.

Karine was unanimously chosen by the Board from a large pool of highly-qualified candidates through a competitive selection process aimed at finding a leader who embodies the mission and values of the Federation.

Karine Morin has over two decades of experience at the intersection of government and the academic community, in both Canada and the United States.

Most recently, at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), she led the tri-agency action plan on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and was instrumental in developing and implementing Dimensions, a flagship program that guided universities and colleges to advance EDI across their research ecosystems.

Over the past 15 years, she held various senior and executive positions and spearheaded complex policy initiatives at funding organizations such as Alberta Innovates, Genome Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Karine holds civil and common law degrees from McGill University, and she also completed a Master’s degree in law at the University of Pennsylvania.

It is also time for us to bid farewell to Interim Chief Administrator Mike DeGagné. Mike has generously dedicated his time to lead the Federation since March. We express our deep gratitude to him for lending his expertise and skills to the Federation during this period.

You will all have the opportunity to meet Karine in the upcoming weeks. Until then, please join me in extending a warm welcome to Karine, and expressing our heartfelt thanks to Mike.

Sincerely,

Annie Pilote
