Academic panel examines the economic value of social innovation for Canada

Advocating for the social sciences and humanities: Differing lessons from Canada, the UK and the US

OTTAWA, June 1, 2015 - The media are invited to attend an international panel session featuring Felice Levine, Executive Director, American Educational Research Association, Chad Gaffield, Professor of History, University of Ottawa and Past-President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and (by pre-taped video) James Wilson, Professor of Science and Democracy, University of Sussex and Chair of the UK Campaign for Social Science. The panel will be moderated by Stephen Toope, Director of University of Toronto’s Munk School of Foreign Affairs and President of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

WHAT: Panel discussion on the urgency for advocating for the humanities and social sciences in Canada, the US and the UK

WHEN: Wednesday, June 3, from 14:00 to 15:00

WHERE: University of Ottawa, Congress Hub (Montpetit Hall) – East Expo Event Space

The panelists will draw upon their country-specific expertise to discuss how national research funding agendas should prioritize people-centred social innovation over the still dominant 20th century technological innovation paradigm. This panel will address head-on the question of the economic value of a broad-based humanities or social science degree, and is co-hosted by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and SAGE Publications.
