Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is having a profound impact on today’s society, to the point that the very future of the translation profession is being called into question. In an article published in the Devoir newspaper, it was noted that the professions of doctor, translator, lawyer and journalist are being transformed and even threatened by AI (“Médecin, traducteur, avocat ou journaliste : les professions transformées par l’IA”). Advances in machine translation and interpretation can create the illusion that these tools will soon replace language professionals. During the roundtable, the three speakers will adopt a nuanced position in order to unpack the ways in which AI can be used for daily communications within both the scholarly community and the general public, the goal being to provide the necessary knowledge to make informed choices. When is using AI a good solution? And when is it advisable to call upon a translator or an interpreter?
