Forgotten History: Ontario’s worst workplace tragedy and the Dutch immigrants who lost their lives
When it happened, the Dresden cave-in of 1957 was Ontario's worst workplace tragedy and cost the lives of six Dutch immigrants. It was front page news in Canada and the Netherlands, but within three years the story had disappeared completely. Today, except for those who experienced it, this story is unknown. Filmmaker Eric Philpott's late father was the site engineer in Dresden and left behind detailed records. With these documents as a starting point, Eric Philpott scoured archives, explored the area, and tracked down the families of the victim to reconstruct what happened - and its impact. The result is a saga of Dutch postwar immigration, the building of modern Ontario, a construction disaster, and a sobering reflection on identity, justice, and remembrance.
