"I remember hearing my son's heartbeat the very first time": Academic upgrading students map their histories and dreams for their futures through photovoice
In this symposium, we feature the photovoice projects and reflections of students in a college academic upgrading course. These projects emerged from a collaborative inquiry that invited students to document significant moments in their lives through digital storytelling. This collaborative, multimodal approach enabled students to create personal narratives about their complex histories, identities, and dreams while exploring their personal lives and relationships in classrooms, schools, and their city. Students used these projects to disrupt the typical college curriculum, which often fails to regard students’ lives as epistemic resources. This session will include reflections by members of our research team and presentations by six college students who will share the products of their research. Their presentations will be followed by comments from a respondent.
